apology (n.)

early 15c., "defense, justification," from Late Latin apologia, from Greek apologia "a speech in defense," from apologeisthai "to speak in one's defense," from apo- "away from, off" + logos "speech".

Samuel Johnson's 18th Century English dictionary defines it as "Defence; excuse," and adds, "Apology generally signifies rather excuse than vindication, and tends rather to extenuate the fault, than prove innocence.

WE LIVE IN THE AGE OF BAD PUBLIC APOLOGIES.

Tech companies caught stealing personal data. Non-tech companies caught losing personal data to hackers and lying about it. Youtubers apologizing for doing something awful (mean to a “friend,” never shipped the merch you bought, said a bunch of racial slurs). And a seemingly infinite parade of men with the same weird look on their face apologizing for what we amazingly refer to by the euphemism “sexual misconduct.”

Apologia will be a pubic event honoring the history and current bloom of the bad apology, attempting to chart a path forward towards the better apology of tomorrow.

FEATURING:
Re-performances of famous bad public apologies
Outdoor parade/procession
Shared meals and discussion
A public workshop in restorative justice practice
Panel discussion on the politics of accountability, (de-)humanization, and agency
